How We Test Retro Games
Our Retro Game Testing Process
Every retro game at Dio's Treasures goes through a hands-on inspection before it's listed or shipped. Here's exactly what we check — and what we disclose — so you know what you're getting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you boot-test every game?
Yes. Every cartridge and disc-based game is powered on and verified to reach the title screen or gameplay before we list it. If a game did not boot successfully during our testing, we will say so in the listing.
What does "Tested Working" mean?
"Tested Working" (sometimes abbreviated TW) means the game was powered on in our store, reached gameplay, and showed no obvious functional issues at the time of testing. It is not a guarantee of long-term performance, but it does mean the game worked when it left us.
What condition grades do you use?
We use the following shorthand in our listings:
- CIB (Complete In Box) — Cartridge or disc, original box, and original manual are all present.
-
GB (Game & Box) — Cartridge or disc with box or case & cover art no manuel
- GO (Game Only) — Cartridge or disc only, no box or manual.
- SEA (Sealed) — Factory sealed; the packaging has not been opened. We do not open sealed items to test them.
Do you check for corrosion?
Yes. We inspect cartridge contacts and board-accessible areas for corrosion, oxidation, and battery leakage before listing. These items may not be listed depending on the severity of the damage. If any of these do exist the game will be tested thoroughly to make sure the game works.
What about save batteries?
Many retro cartridges use a small internal battery (CR2032 or similar) to retain save data. These batteries have a limited lifespan — often 20–30 years from manufacture — and we do not guarantee that the original battery in any cartridge will hold a save. If we know the battery has been replaced, we'll note it. If we have not tested battery-save retention specifically, we'll say so. We never make promises about how long a save battery will last.
How do you grade case and manual condition?
We grade physical condition separately from functionality. Common disclosures include:
- Box: creasing, fading, writing, tears, missing flaps, water damage
- Manual: yellowing, writing, torn pages, missing pages
- Cartridge/Disc: label tears, writing, heavy scratching, sticker residue
Photos in the listing are stock photos. If you need photos, please ask us before purchasing.
What if a game stops working after I receive it?
Retro hardware can be unpredictable. If your item arrives and does not match the listed condition or functionality, contact us right away and we'll make it right. Please review our full return policy for details.
